art nouveau

I understand Art Nouveau may be to many little more than an artistic movement that disappeared almost as quickly as it emerged between the 19th & 20th centuries, but I argue that it is justifiably the first truly “modern” philosophical revolution to which the modernism and post-modernism of the current era owe an inarguable debt.

The painting The Red Rose and the White Rose, of which this is a detail, is by the often overlooked Glaswegian Art Nouveau artist Margaret Macdonald, who, in addition to being married to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, showed Gustav Klimt how to paint in her decidedly decorative and ornamental style. She can rightfully be called the forgotten “mother of Art Nouveau.”
